Following the recommendation of the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) means that your chimney should be inspected annually. A CSIA inspection includes 3 levels. These thoroughly assess the chimney and all it’s components at various degrees of need. So, if you didn’t use your chimney at all this year you need an inspection. Additionally, if you use it everyday you need an inspection.
During Your Chimney Inspection
While a certified chimney sweep is diagnosing your chimney system using a video scan, possible damage is assessed. The current state of the chimney, even if it is safe and operable at the time of inspection, may need to have measures taken to prevent things like water penetration, carbon monoxide intrusion, lower inefficiency, and improved quality of air in your home.
The Three Levels of Inspection
There are three levels of CSIA chimney inspections. All of them are necessary to discover issues with the entire chimney system:
- Level 1 Inspection:
This inspection is scheduled annually if no changes have been made to the chimney system. It covers every readily accessible portion of the chimney’s interior, exterior, appliance, and chimney connection. Your chimney sweep will assess the basic soundness of the system and make sure the flue is free of obstruction or deposits.
NOTE: If the technician finds an obstruction or deposit buildup, he will recommend a chimney sweep. Your technician may also make recommendations for waterproofing, flu sealing, chimney cap installation, and other preventative measures if warranted. - Level 2 Inspection:
This inspection is scheduled if there has been a change in the system. This includes a new product installation or a change in fuel. Also, it’s required if a property is sold or transferred to new ownership. This inspection covers everything a level one does. Additionally, it will include the accessible portions of the chimney exterior and interior. This also includes attics, crawl spaces, and basements. Your technician will address proper clearances from combustibles and accessible locations.
NOTE: If your technician finds a problem or suspected hidden hazard during a level 1 or 2 inspection he will recommend a level 3 inspection. This is a serious recommendation! It means the technician is concerned about chimney safety. - Level 3 Inspection:
When a hidden hazard is discovered or suspected, tools are required to remove components of the chimney system or building. This is when a Level 3 inspection is scheduled. When necessary the chimney crown, interior chimney wall, and other components may need to be removed. This is in order to gain access to a hazardous problem and assess it thoroughly.
NOTE: If a repair is recommended during a level 3 inspection, it is most likely a serious hazard that should be addressed.
